The hats of Isabelle : a job under
the skin
Isabelle, with the passion of feminine hats, decided, after a high school degree, to open a shop of women's hats in Metz. A little girl's dream ! As a child, Isabelle always loved sewing and made clothes for her toy-babies, never forgetting the hats ! Later on, she listened to her grand-mother, Mrs Germaine Eckert, telling her old tales for hours. The woman was a milliner and had a boutique, closing it only to take a well deserved retirement. None of the daughters of Mrs Eckert wanted to take this occupation over. It took a new generation, one of her granddaughters, to take over the flame.
Isabelle
opened her store in 1986 which allowed her to indulge in her
passion for creation. Isabelle is the last of the kind in Metz
today. Of course, the hypermarkets and garment-stores are
somewhat of a competition, but she is confident.
"Of
course, I also sell models fabricated in factories, but I try to
find products different from those of other stores, and mostly I
create numerous exclusive models. My customers like to visit in
order to be counselled, even pampered !".
Truly, Isabelle, always smiling, does not
hesitate to open her stock to satisfy a demand. If a model is too
small, she makes it wider on a mould. She also repairs hats. On
the day of our visit, a lady brought a hat whose interior was
distended and ruined after a clean in dry-cleaners ! But mostly,
she invents exclusive models of hats, berets and so on, in
numerous types of cloth, such as wool, satin, fur, etc... But of
all the matters, it is felt she prefers, but watch out, the real
one, of wild hare hair. The big advantage of a felt in wild hare
hair is its lasting usage. "More than fifteen years" says
Isabelle. And if fashion changes, the hat can be remodeled and
have a new life.
Hats off, Isabelle ! (Daily paper "Le
Républicain Lorrain")
